THE FILM-

This is one of the most awaited and one of the biggest films of this year as well as for Kareena Kapoor. Produced and directed by the Barjatyas who have earlier given innumerable hit films one after the other, this is one more of their home productions releasing after nearly four years of their previous hit, Hum Saath Saath Hain. No wonder, all eyes were set on this film to see if this film repeated the success of all their previous films. This is a story about mistaken identity and all about the life of a young bubbly simple small town girl Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor). She lives with her parents (Himani Shivpuri and Pankaj Kapur) and her pets Johnny the dog and Raja the parrot in a small beautiful town by the name Sunder Nagar. Her elder sister Roopa (Tanaaz Currim) is already married and settled in the U.S. and now, Sanjana after she finishes college, finds that her sister has found a suitable boy, Prem who is rich, good looking and the ideal one for Sanjana. But Sanjana is in no mood to get married just after finishing college. So, with great reluctance, she agrees to take a look at Prem when he comes to Sunder Nagar for a few days stay.  But slowly, finds herself falling in love with Prem even though they have very different tastes, opinions and choices in life. All is well, until she finds that this person, Prem Kishen is not the Prem who was supposed to be thought of for her, when enters the actual Prem, Prem Kumar. Now she develops a good friendship with this Prem II and also finds that they share almost all same tastes and choices and he is a very good person too. But her heart still beats for Prem Kishen. But then, he was not the one actually she was supposed to meet. Then whom will she choose? Further trouble arises when she finds that Prem Kumar also has fallen in love with her and even his mother( Reema Lagoo) has approved of Sanjana for her son. Also, Sanjana’s mother also wants this marriage to happen because, in her opinion, Prem Kumar is more suitable for Kareena since he is richer and higher in status compared to Prem Kishen. Now whom will Sanjana choose? Prem Kumar, her very good friend and the one actually supposed to be hers, or Prem Kishen, for whom her heart beats and who also loves her deeply and eternally. This confusion about the two Prems is what the gist of the story holds. The film begins well, gains some momentum but loses speed in the middle and gains again in the second half when the second Prem comes on scene. The film is on the whole, shot very well and is very enjoyable throughout. You will be thoroughly immersed and engrossed in the story about Sanjana and her life as the film proceeds. You will not get bored for a moment also. The screenplay is very interesting and nice to watch and the songs are chartbusters, shot beautifully and very interestingly in picture perfect locations. Infact you just shouldn’t miss out the songs. This story basically is only about Sanjana, so Kareena Kapoor gets all the attention in this movie and all the plum scenes. Whereas, the two heroes of the movie are quite sidelined. Hrithik Roshan quite overacts and spoils the character he was supposed to play, but, the surprise package of this movie are Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan. Sooraj Barjatya invariably extracts superb performances from these two stars. Kareena looks amazingly gorgeous and down to earth and acts excellently, showing all the right emotions and expressions in the right places. This is a refreshing change from her earlier haughty and brattish roles. As for Abhishek Bachchan, his role doesn’t require much of emotions or expressions and no dancing either, so he performs it quite well, underplaying his character. He imparts a sort of sweetness to his role and also looks sweet on screen, if not exactly handsome. One really interesting and fresh concept in this movie is the characterization of Sanjana’s four close friends, Dolly, Ruby, Gurpreet and Shabnam who call themselves “Angels”. They are given really meaningful roles and not just tag along as the heroine’s friends. As for other actors, they are all alright in their own roles. But Sooraj has shown the relationship between Sanjana and her father very beautifully and Kareena plays the role of this duty abiding daughter so wonderfully with so much innocence and simplicity, that you can’t believe it is she who played roles like Poo in K3G and Tina in Mujhse Dosti Karoge. She gets the right mix of charm, good looks, bubbliness, innocence, vivacity and sweetness which is very essential for this character Sanjana. This is Kareena’s film all the way from the first scene to the last and Kareena has definitely taken leaps and bounds in terms of looks and acting. This film is definitely worth watching more than once and provides the entertainment value what we expect in a Sooraj Barjatya movie. But this film could definitely not re-create the magic of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Maine Pyaar Kiya. It got a super bumper opening all over and continued so till about 3 weeks or so but slowly collections began to drop.

This movie was a semi-hit at the box-office.
